South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund
The South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund was established in 2000 by the State of South Carolina legislature (Bill S54 44-38-510 ) to promote research to develop better understanding of causes and effective treatment strategies for paralysis, sensory loss, and other consequences of spinal cord injury and disease. Laws passed in the State of South Carolina authorize fund use to cover basic operating and administrative costs, but direct that the balance be provided for spinal cord injury research projects.
Federal funding provides for a comprehensive network of assistance and information programs for the physically handicapped and wheelchair bound, to increase access to assistive technology devices and services for individuals with disabilities and their families. Wheelchair funding sources are made available for disabled persons and their families to help with costs associated with manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, invacare wheelchairs, wheelchair supplies, and much more.
In South Carolina alone, how many people does spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) affect, and what is total economic impact of SCI/D? Below are the South Carolina spinal cord injury facts as listed on the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund website:

- 66% of the TSCI occur at prime of lives (age 20-54).
- 3/4th of injuries occur among males.
- All races are equally affected.
- Highest average acute care charge of $85,256 is incurred by those with complete paralysis (ASIA=A).
- Lowest is $27,248 incurred by those with recoverable TSCI (ASIA=E).
- Overall acute care charge of TSCI (Acute care hospital fee) from 1990-2000 is $ 111,409,136 which indicates an annual acute care charge of $ 10,000,000 is expended for acute hospital care of TSCI only.
- Using the willingness-to-pay method of cost analysis, the total economic impact of TSCI in SC is estimated at $ 25,765,812 per annum in 1997-dollar values.
- 58% of the TSCI are the result of motor vehicle injuries.

FAAST Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center
In our recent post, Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP), we discussed the BSCIP partnership with the Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology, Inc. (FAAST). These two organizations have partnered to identify and assist Floridians with brain and/or spinal cord injuries to obtain assistive technology.
The FAAST Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center is a non-profit, statewide resources information clearinghouse that provides ready access to the most recent spinal cord injury related materials to people with spinal cord injuries, their families, support groups, and rehabilitation professionals. FAAST has a lot of important and useful information to share with the public: news, product reviews, support group info, and current events just to start out with.
See their Fact Sheet (PDF) for a quick overview. For more detailed information, see their Needs and Resources Assessment (PDF) document.

Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program
In 1999, the Florida State legislature passed legislation that transferred the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) from the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security to the Florida Department of Health effective January 1, 2000. The mission of the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) is to provide all eligible residents who sustain a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury the opportunity to obtain the necessary services enabling them to return to their community.
The Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) and the Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology, Inc. (FAAST) have partnered to identify and assist Floridians with brain and/or Spinal cord injuries to obtain assistive technology. Persons eligible to receive assistance from the Emergency Assistive Technology Fund (EATF), might receive from $100.00 to $5,000.00 to cover the cost of assistive technology devices; EATF funding may be combined with other community matching funds.
The AT products can range from simple devices like grab bars to high-tech items such as vision, hearing, speech, seating, positioning, and mobility devices. Wheelchair funding for assistive technology devices for mobility include but are not limited to manual wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, invacare wheelchairs, lightweight wheelchairs, and even wheelchair tires and other wheelchair supplies.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Network
The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Network is the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association. In existence over forty years, and incorporated as a 501[c][3] in DC, Maryland and Virginia since 1982, SCI Network provides support and services to people with spinal cord injuries and other mobility impairing conditions, and to their families and friends.
Support Group
SCI Network offers peer support for people with spinal cord injuries, for spouses/significant others, and for family and friends. The spouses group meets monthly in area restaurants. Historically it has been difficult to keep an ongoing support group for people with SCI. There almost never seems to be enough interest. The Network’s Peer Support Program fills the gap. Leave an e-mail, send a comment below, or call the office at 301-424-8335, give SCI information about age, interests, level of injury if applicable, etc., and they will find your peer. After that, they set up a meeting or just exchange phone numbers, and let you take it from there. You are welcomed to attend a peer-to-peer training.
Wheelchair Basketball Team
The SCI Network and Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland (formally Kessler-Adventist) in Rockville, Maryland have formed an alliance with a local wheelchair basketball team. Many amputees play wheelchair basketball.
There are other active sports for disabled persons in wheelchairs. Furthermore, there is a wide variety of modern, manual and electric wheelchairs to chose from these days. There all types of specialized wheelchairs for wheelchair baseball, wheelchair hockey, wheelchair rugby, and other events. Whether in need of regular wheelchairs, quickie wheelchairs, invacare wheelchairs, lightweight wheelchairs, sport wheelchairs, wheelchair tires, or other wheelchair supplies, take the time to search for wheelchair funding resources before you buy.
The offices of SCI Network are staffed by volunteers and are normally open from 9 AM until 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Occasionally, during inclement weather or for other reasons, the office may not be open, but the Information & Referral line will be forwarded to a volunteer.
